Thousands of needles are cleared safely from one residential property during a house clearance job in Chard, Somerset.

The customer in this instance runs an organisation that brings empty properties back into use, in and around Somerset. The house in question had been used for a few years as a drug den, so once they had been evicted, the house not only needed clearing of the whole household items and rubbish they left behind, but also the thousands of discarded needles and drug paraphernalia that was just laying around the property.

As needles are classified as clinical / hazardous waste materials, they must be collected and disposed of safely. Not a job for an amateur! Needles can cause injury through cutting / piercing skin and there is a high risk of infection. It’s not just the needles that need clearing (and quite often they are hidden away out of sight), but there is usually also lots of orange needle caps, small clear bags, aluminium foil and small metal spoons.

The customer had used PPS UK Ltd previously and was very happy with the services received, so when this issue arose, he had no hesitation in calling again to get PPS UK Ltd booked into this important job.

Following receiving the call from the customer, Tony from PPS UK Ltd reviewed his requirements and then emailed over a written proposal and quote. The customer then had a few more questions to be answered, which was done over the phone and then he approved the quote.

The agreed details of the job were then confirmed via email:

– 2-bedroom house clearance
– Rubbish, furniture, everything!
– Needles clearance and disposal
– Garden clearance and tidy
– Cutting down a tree

On each of the days, Tony arrived with two colleagues promptly at 8am and got to work. All the necessary tools and equipment were bought to the site. On the first day, the number of needles surpassed the number anticipated as many were hidden and only found when other rubbish had been removed. Therefore, a call was made to the customer to explain the situation and check that they understood that, as this would take more time to clear, there would be extra costs (although this has been explained and covered in the proposal already).

By the end of the job, the team had filled two caged transit tippers of rubbish and collected 35 litres of discarded needles in sharps disposal boxes. Everything was taken away at the end of the job and disposed of legally.
